This is our latest post in a series of featured makers. We are introducing our makers one at a time and giving you a bit of a behind-the-scenes story and insights to their practice. Today we would like to introduce:
Zoe and Gem
First up. Who are you and what do you do?
Hi I’m Gemma, I live in Hastings with my 3 children, hubby and some chooks. Zoe and Gem is my wee business, and I dabble in all things crafty, but mostly focusing on children’s clothing, accessories and toys.
How and why did you get started (instead of getting a proper job like your mother told you)?
I started 5 years ago when I only had one child – Zoe, and it has grown from there! I have always wanted to run my own business, and love creating. Its my form of relaxation and meditation.
What was the first thing you made?
I started with bibs and eye spy bags for business purposes, but the first thing I actually made was a pair of rainbow merino knitted pants for my then 3 month old daughter.
Who or what influences you or inspires you?
I draw inspiration from anywhere and everywhere- I love stalking other makers on Pinterest and Etsy. I am especially drawn to bright fabrics and quirky prints.
What is your favourite part of making?
Usually cutting fabric pieces and deciding on fabrics/mixing and matching different prints, but I love the satisfaction of looking at a finished piece on the rack.
How do you market your business?
I’m pretty low key with social media, you can find me on Instagram and Facebook, but my posts are rather sporadic. Three kids keep me so busy I struggle to keep up with me sewing let alone advertising.
What tips do you have for others starting out in this game?
Have faith in your products, do your own thing, and enjoy the process. If it isn’t enjoyable, there is no point in doing it.
If you could gift one of your creations to anyone living or dead. Who would that be and what would you give them? Why?
If I had to gift a creation to anyone, I think I would LOVE to see Princess Charlotte in one of my wee tops or dresses – she is so cute and has such confidence and sass, I love the older fashion silhouettes she wears.
Do you have any new ideas on the drawing board?
I have a few new styles for summer coming out soon, some wee flutter sleeve tops and dresses, and short rompers and sunsuits, not enough hours in the day!
World Domination! How will you achieve it?
Lol, I’m quite an introvert, no plans for world domination, I’m happy if I have a bit of time to myself every day, to do my own thing-keeps me happy and grounded.
What is next for you?
I’m happy just ticking along as I am going at the moment, so no big plans or aspirations at present.
Thanks for sharing your time and giving us an insight to your brand. We look forward to seeing your development and growth. Zoe and Gem can be found on their Facebook page and in-store at The Department of Curiosities and Fine Things in Napier, and other fine galleries and showcase spaces around New Zealand.
