About us

Imagine you work for a big organisation. In an office. You have a desk and a chair and everyday you turn up and sit, and wait. But nothing ever happens. You begin to suspect that the department has been here so long that the parent organisation has forgotten it even exists.

After a while you get bored just sitting and being an imaginative soul you decide to do something to fill in your time. As your creativity takes over the office space, cubicles slowly become mini displays and makers start adding their creative pursuits.

The Department of Curiosities and Fine Things has emerged from the 80s office wasteland.

Nau mai, Haere mai. Welcome to the Department.

Located at 14 Hastings Street, Napier, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. The Department of Curiosities and Fine Things is a curated collection of handmade products from some of the finest creative makers in New Zealand.

This eclectic collection is wrangled into shape by a fistful of makers who go by the name of “The Curators”  . . . . Andy Heyward of Fat Spatula,  Michelle Ransom of Circo, and Mel Stothers of Wildflower Designs.
