This is our latest post in a series of featured makers. We are introducing our makers one at a time and giving you a bit of a behind-the-scenes story and insights to their practice. This week we would like to introduce:
First up. Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Russ Tuck, I create a unique and eclectic mix of wood wares and furniture from recycled native timber. I trade under The Rimu Shed and create in a workshop/showroom in Onekawa, Napier
How and why did you get started (instead of getting a proper job like your mother told you)?
Trust your mother, chances are she will be your greatest advocate.
Unless you are Colin McCahon , it’s helpful to have a degree or trade to help finance your passion. I didn’t listen carefully enough.
What was the first thing you made?
A wooden case under the tutelage of Ces Mathews – Form 4 , Napier Boys High School, marked a dismal 4 out of 10. It sparked the passion for creation and an excellent escape from mathematics.
Who or what influences you or inspires you?
The timber, working with it’s grain often nominates what can be created.
What is your favourite part of making?
Looking at the end result and seeing my mind plan become a reality.
It is a real buzz to receive positive feedback from my customers and selling an item.
How do you market your business?
Largely word of mouth – I invite customers to visit the Department of Curiosities and Fine Things or my workshop showroom at 1 Edmundson Street. I support some local schools’ fetes and galas and can be found at the Hawthorne Market in Havelock North , the first Saturday of the calendar month.
What tips do you have for others starting out in this game?
Stay resilient as you could experience many high and lows, both financially and trying to keep abreast of current trends and fashions. Join a group of like-minded people, I have found being in The Department a very positive and supportive experience
If you could gift one of your creations to anyone living or dead. Who would that be and what would you give them? Why?
The matai piano stool currently on sale in store to Mozart, it is a beautiful stool and like Mozart will withstand the test of time.
World Domination! How will you achieve it?
I wouldn’t… I struggle to be the master of my Jack Russell.
